Supporting the 8th Annual National Urban Indian Health Conference

The Seattle Indian Health Board (SIHB) will use this funding to support a conference, the 8th Annual National Urban Indian Health Conference, with the theme "Ready or Not: Preparing for Healthcare Reform," designed to help Urban Indian Health Organizations (UIHOs) prepare for health reform. The target audience is the 34 UIHOs across the country. These organizations provide services to underserved urban American Indians/Alaska Natives in 19 states. Other conference participants will include representatives of tribal clinics, community health clinics, and social service organizations; researchers; community members; and others interested in health reform or Indian health. With recent cuts in federal funding and federal sequestration, many UIHOs have curtailed travel and training. SIHB needs this support to help UIHOs, particularly the smaller programs, participate in the conference, to be held in Seattle, July 9 and 10, 2013. It will be a forum for UIHOs to share information about the issues they face. Through workshops and information sharing, SIHB will provide tools and resources to help UIHOs and others overcome anxieties about the unknown funding future and plan for survival and growth under health reform.
