Advancing the accreditation process for the Maricopa County Department of Public Health

The Foundation's initiative, Advancing Accreditation in Large Jurisdictions, was designed to supply financial and technical assistance to big cities and states to catalyze application to the Public Health Accreditation Board for accreditation of their public health agencies. This grant will enable the Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) to accelerate its readiness to submit a statement of intent (SOI) to apply for national accreditation by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). The objectives are to: (1) complete readiness activities for the accreditation application, including hiring an accreditation coordinator, conducting an accreditation self-assessment and gap analysis, establishing an accreditation team, developing a documentation database, and training staff; (2) develop an accreditation communications plan for an internal MCDPH audience, community partners, and Maricopa County government officials, working with a communications consultant and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Public Health communications team; (3) create partnerships with the county Environmental Services and Air Quality Departments to collaborate on accreditation; (4) complete a departmental strategic plan; (5) develop a quality improvement plan; and (6) submit the SOI to PHAB to apply for accreditation before December 1, 2014. The deliverables will be documentation that these objectives have been achieved. MCDPH, with the Public Health team, has designed this effort to address MCDPH's gaps in readiness to apply for accreditation and to share its successful approaches with other big, as well as smaller, agencies.
