Promoting nurses as leaders in Florida to advance nursing and health policy

The Foundation's initiative, Future of Nursing: State Implementation Program, was designed to support implementation by Campaign for Action Coalitions of recommendations from the Institute of Medicine report, "The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health."This project will implement the recommendation of the Institute of Medicine report on the Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health that calls upon nurses to prepare them to lead change to advance health. This will be accomplished by promoting and developing leadership interest and competency among nurses across all practice levels and professional settings, and increasing the profession's presence in leadership ranks across settings influential to decision making in health care. These include health settings, academia, policy and regulatory environments. Activities include: (1) creating a profile of current nurse leaders in Florida to identify demographics, diversity, board participation, retirement plans, succession planning concerns and work challenges; (2) promoting education and development of nurses as leaders in Florida so that healthcare systems, delivery settings, the State of Florida, and related industries will be served by nursing expertise; (3) creating pathways or systems to identify and communicate leadership opportunities in Florida; and (4) informing officials and leaders (public, private and nonprofit agencies and organizations) on the demonstrated value of leveraging nursing expertise. Deliverables include: quarterly reports showing progress toward designated benchmarks and outcomes; ongoing engagement and leadership in the Campaign for Action online community as evidenced by at least 1 posting per week; an annual report at the end of each year of the grant; and a final project report demonstrating lessons learned and outcomes of the project.
