Supporting the Plainsboro, N.J., Fire Company's vehicle replacement and upgrade program

Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located. The Foundation grant provides the Plainsboro Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 Inc.--a nonprofit entity--an $80,000 challenge to purchase two new vehicles and upgrade a vehicle already in use. This includes a new brush truck and command vehicle and retrofitting a truck to carry equipment for water and ice rescues and for pumping out flooded commercial and residential buildings. The Plainsboro Board of Fire Commissioners will match the RWJF grant on a 1-to-1 dollar basis to fund the total $160,000 plan for vehicle replacement and improvement. This grant is consistent with Foundation support of the township and its volunteer fire department.
