Strengthening the ability of elected county officials to create, enhance and maintain healthy communities

The Foundation's initiative, Mobilizing Action Toward Community Health (MATCH), was designed to help communities translate the County Health Rankings into multisector action that addresses the social, economic, environmental and behavioral factors that affect health. This grant supports the National Association of Counties Research Foundation (the Association) in increasing awareness of the County Health Rankings and the importance of and strategies to improve population health among the Association's members across the country. By providing a forum for local elected and appointed officials to convene to discuss common health challenges and solutions; facilitating a learning exchange among counties and other community partners on promising interventions and evidence-based policies and practices; and disseminating tools and case studies, the Association intends to increase awareness of the importance of communitywide prevention efforts and incentivize action to improve population health in counties across the country. In addition to increasing awareness of County Health Rankings & Roadmaps (CHR&R) tools, deliverables for this grant include: a new Web page to host project-related materials and tools; six local community convenings and corresponding event reports; a national in-person education forum on the Rankings and on public-private partnerships to improve health; two workshop sessions at the Association's annual conference on topics related to CHR&R; and an enhanced Healthy Counties Database that will highlight county policies and programs to improve health. Additionally, the Association's staff will participate in monthly strategy calls with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the CHR&R team from the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute as a way to ensure coordination with the broader CHR&R initiative. The topics explored through this project will be general in nature and will not touch on areas of specific legislation. Rather, the project is designed to broadly enhance the capacity of local elected and appointed officials in addressing health challenges in their communities.
