Supporting restoration of Branch Brook Park in Newark, N.J.
Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located.This Foundation grant will help the Branch Brook Park Alliance (Alliance), a public/private partnership, complete restoration of Branch Brook Park in Newark, N.J. The grant will help the Alliance: (1) renovate the park's two-mile Lenape Trail walking path; (2) design and install a pedestrian entrance and walkway (from the trail) to the park's Urban Farm; and (3) support development of educational, health-promotion and communications activities to attract more visitors to the park. Renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted conceived the park in 1867 as a response to unhealthful conditions faced by dwellers in expanding industrial cities. Both the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places list the 360-acre park.
