This grant supports the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in leveraging its local, state and national infrastructure to advance policies that address the epidemic of childhood obesity. Specifically, NAACP will focus on policies that: (1) improve the nutritional quality of foods provided to students outside school lunch programs, and (2) promote street-scale improvements and agreements between various entities to share facilities and responsibilities as a way of increasing physical activity in communities. At the national level, NAACP will advocate adopting strong dietary guidelines for schools and directing resources for street-scale improvements to those communities most impacted by the childhood obesity epidemic. At the state and local levels, two of NAACP's state conferences will identify five local communities to coordinate advocacy efforts on these specific policy goals. Additionally, NAACP will increase the capacity of its membership to advocate these goals by conducting training sessions and workshops at its national convention and regional conferences. NAACP will not use RWJF funds for lobbying.
