This project will establish the Big Cities Health Coalition (BCHC) as part of the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). Big-city health commissioners formed BCHC in 2002 to enable the leaders of 17 health departments in large cities and counties exchange ideas and address priority issues and was initially managed by the Fund for Public Health in New York. NACCHO will now manage BCHC and share lessons from BCHC with all NACCHO members; matrix BCHC with areas of NACCHO expertise; and support big-city leaders in educating policymakers and other stakeholders on unique big-city issues. Specifically, NACCHO will: (1) convene BCHC members to share information and solutions on issues the members identify as priorities; (2) develop and establish a website (BigCitiesHealthCoalition.org) to facilitate the virtual exchange of ideas among members and dissemination to other health departments; (3) develop member-driven regulatory comments during public-comment periods and in white papers, op-ed articles and open letters to educate appropriate audiences on specific issues; and (4) ensure that the distinctive perspectives and voices of BCHC members are included at appropriate national and policy-setting meetings. NACCHO will not use Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funds to support lobbying.
