Implementing the Linked Learning approach for secondary schools in Oakland, Calif. -- East Bay Asian Youth Center

The Foundation's Roadmaps to Health Community grants initiative was designed to identify, support, and disseminate models of cross-sector coalitions working to improve health by taking action to address the social and economic determinants of health, such as education, employment, income, community safety, and family and social support.East Bay Asian Youth Center and a city-wide, multi-sector coalition seeks a ten-year commitment of public funds in Oakland, CA, to fully implement a "Linked Learning" approach to secondary education in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). This strategy will increase high school graduation and post-secondary enrollment and will decrease the achievement gap for African American and Latino Students by linking learning with career preparation. The coalition will educate parents, students, educators, after-school providers and employers through non-lobbying means; collaborate with the OUSD as they develop a plan for linked learning that serves 9,000 students; and analyze various potential funding models to support the roll-out of an at-scale linked learning program. Deliverables include education and engagement of families, educators, and employers, development of a district-wide linked learning plan, documentation of the impact and benefits of a linked learning program for the OUSD, and development of a funding strategy that can be pursued after the two-year grant period.
