Supporting the Khan Academy's Medical and Health Initiative to leverage technology to create radical change in medical education
With this funding, the Khan Academy (Khan) will pilot and demonstrate proof of concept for a new model of online medical education. With this Medical and Health Initiative (Initiative), Khan hopes to build a robust library of online medical-education content to support medical education for both medical trainees and lay people. These online medical courses will allow medical trainees and others to learn core material at their own speed and location. The Initiative will focus on two key components: (1) building the software infrastructure necessary to support third-party content, and (2) piloting various forms of medical content, such as preclinical medical school courses, public health, and residency-content tutorials, with embedded self-assessment questions. In this pilot and proof-of-concept phase, Khan, in collaboration with Stanford Medical School (Stanford), will develop a video-navigation experience and build a site to host Stanford online content. Stanford and Khan will create one to three medical school courses that will support medical-student learning and provide free and unrestricted access to select Stanford course content. Khan will also separately create a minimum of 50 videos on common illnesses, such as hypertension and heart attacks.
