Supporting PICO National Network's initiative to prevent childhood obesity
This grant supports the PICO National Network (PICO), a national interfaith advocacy network, in engaging in the national conversation about preventing childhood obesity and overseeing the advocacy efforts of nine affiliated state networks, which will focus on advancing policies to help reverse the epidemic by 2015. Advocacy efforts within this program will focus on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's six advocacy targets for reversing the childhood obesity epidemic: (1) Reducing access to unhealthy competitive foods in schools; (2) increasing the number of healthy-food retail outlets receiving funding from food-financing initiatives in underserved communities; (3) improving physical activity standards during out-of-school/out-of-class time in underserved communities; (4) increasing the use of joint-use agreements and street-scale improvements in underserved communities; (5) reducing consumption of unhealthy beverages, using pricing incentives or disincentives; and (6) increasing incentives and demand for strengthening industry self-regulation and government regulation of food marketing to kids. Each of the nine state networks will select and focus on one advocacy target for the duration of the grant, and PICO, the lead national organization, will strategically engage in activities to help advance all six targets.
