This grant provides partial funding of a project that will establish and run the State Health Care Cost Containment Commission. The commission, which will be co-chaired by Mike Leavitt, the former governor of Utah and former secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Christine Gregoire, governor of Washington state, will include former Medicaid directors, physicians, and representatives of hospital systems, health plans, large and small businesses, and consumers. The commission's charge will be to create a model state-based process for governors and state leaders to use to create a consensus state plan on cost containment, identify data systems states can use to inform strategic planning, and identify and assess various cost-containment options uniquely suited to states.
