Novel investigation of the influence of genes on functional outcomes following subarachnoid hemorrhage -- Matthew J. Gallek, PhD, RN

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars program was designed to increase the stature and academic standing of nursing faculty and draw more nurses to teaching careers by creating a cadre of national leaders in academic nursing through career development awards to outstanding junior nursing faculty.Dr. Gallek was selected as a 2012 RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholar. The goal of his prospective descriptive study is to determine the relationships among polymorphisms of the parathyroid hormone gene, ionized calcium concentrations, parathyroid hormone concentrations, cerebral vasospasm, and functional outcomes following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Over the next three years in the program, Dr. Gallek will have 60 percent protected time to focus on program activities; receive financial support for career development activities in his research and scholarly focus area; work closely with institutional and national mentors to develop his career as an academic nurse leader; and receive training and mentoring in areas such as developing a research and academic career plan, securing research funding, integrating research and scholarship into teaching, exerting leadership through professional and university service, influencing health care policy through research, and developing skills to assume a senior leadership role in academic nursing.
