The Foundation's National Program for Public Health Research was designed to further the growth and impact of the field of public health services and systems research (PHSSR) by coordinating current PHSSR investments, supporting real-world applications of research, strengthening the capacity of researchers and practitioners, catalyzing the translation and application of findings into practice, increasing visibility and champions for the work, and attracting other funders to the field. To date, the National Coordinating Center for PHSSR (NCC) has managed five rounds of grants that have provided 37 doctoral candidates and junior faculty with $10,000 each to conduct PHSSR projects. Several past awardees have continued to conduct PHSSR and serve as peer mentors for other junior investigators. For the sixth round of junior-investigator awards, NCC will: (1) direct and oversee the call-for-proposal process; (2) support up to 10 doctoral candidates and/or junior faculty with awards of up to $10,000 each for 12-month projects; (3) match each awardee with a senior PHSSR mentor; (4) respond to technical assistance requests and provide coaching on research translation and dissemination; (5) monitor grantees' progress through monthly calls and quarterly progress reports; (6) support presentations at the annual PHSSR Keeneland Conference and other relevant national conferences; and (7) assess the impact of the program's contribution to building the field of PHSSR.
