Supporting the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies' 2012 national conference on health equity

This grant supports a national conference, "Place Matters for Health: Models of Action, Innovation, and Collaboration," of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies on September 5, 2012. The purpose of this conference is highlight effective community-based strategies that address structural and systemic barriers to good health faced by low-income communities, particularly as these pertain to young people of color. The conference will convene key stakeholders, including grassroots leaders, elected officials, researchers, public health practitioners, policymakers, and community organizers. It will feature presentations designed to: (1) illuminate the mechanisms through which neighborhood conditions directly and indirectly shape the health of children, youth, and families, (2) document differences in neighborhood conditions resulting from residential segregation, (3) elevate evidence-based strategies to improve neighborhood conditions for health, and (4) explore strategies to better communicate this research to key audiences, such as public health practitioners and elected officials. The Joint Center anticipates hosting 350 attendees and will conduct a post-conference evaluation. By convening national leaders, including members of Congress and federal health agency officials, the Joint Centers seeks to raise awareness regarding community conditions that shape health and to develop policy solutions at the intersection of place and health, particularly as it pertains to people of color and health equity.
