This grant support will continue the Collaborative Food Safety Forum (the Forum), funded jointly by the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. This multistakeholder convening is focused on implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act, legislation that empowers the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with new regulatory authority and tools to enhance the U.S. food-safety system, with a focus on prevention. RESOLVE, a nonprofit facilitation and mediation organization, will manage this project, building on and leveraging the base that the first series of workshops established. The Forum will allow stakeholders to delve deep into critical questions of implementation, such as improving transparency for the third-party certification process; integrating state and federal roles in the program to inspect domestic facilities; establishing a sustainable funding source for FDA's food-safety program; or facilitating information sharing between the public and private sectors. The Forum may also serve as a venue for tackling controversial topics that emerge, and further dialogue will continue to provide federal agencies charged with implementing these laws with a better understanding of stakeholder interests and to inform their ongoing efforts to develop and put into place a better food-safety system. Deliverables will include research and investigation to select the key topics to be addressed; up to six in-person convenings of stakeholders; up to six three-hour conference calls; and products such as meeting reports, scoping documents, and a final report.
