Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located. This grant provides continued support for the New Brunswick Cultural Center (NBCC), including: (1) conducting a city visioning and planning process for new arts groups and activities; (2) developing schematic plans and cost estimates for renovations at George Street Playhouse and Crossroads Theatre; (3) developing a business plan to begin centralization of NBCC management; and (4) starting a joint city and NBCC marketing plan to promote the city as an arts destination in Central New Jersey. This grant represents approximately 12 percent of the NBCC annual budget. Other sources of support include Johnson + Johnson, the J. Seward Johnson Foundation, and earned income (e.g., NBCC's collection of parking fees for performances).
