Implementing a plan to increase the proportion of nurses with a BSN degree to 80 percent: Los Angeles area

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Academic Progression in Nursing initiative was designed to establish a national program that oversees the implementation of strategies to increase the educational progression of nurses to obtain baccalaureate and higher degrees.The California Institute for Nursing and Health Care's Los Angeles Regional Collaboration program utilizes a statewide model that provides a pathway for nurses to be educated at the BSN level, using ADN programs as the foundation, and adopting an integrated curriculum design. The model overcomes traditional barriers of articulation between ADN and BSN programs by providing for concurrent enrollment in BSN pre-requisite courses while enrolled in the ADN program, as well as increases the number of nurses from ethnic and racially underrepresented population groups. Based on the statewide Collaborative Model of Nursing Education (CMNE) operating in other areas of the state, the program has the following characteristics: dual admission, shared faculty, integrated curriculum, Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies, and the ability to complete the BSN in one more year of full-time study following completion of the community college nursing program. Through the implementation of the shared regional curriculum and supporting activities, the program will increase the number of nurses working in Los Angeles area with a BSN.
