Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Community Health Leaders

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Community Health Leaders program was designed to provide recognition for the contributions community health leaders make to achieving RWJF's mission and goals and to enhance the capacity of these individuals to have a more permanent and widespread impact on health care problems. The program honors 10 individuals who have made significant contributions to improving the health and health care of their communities. Each Community Health Leader receives an award in the amount of $125,000. Twenty thousand dollars goes directly to the leader to recognize past accomplishments and $105,000 supports a project that continues and enhances the leader's work through an appropriate organization with which the leader is associated. Gabriel Rincon, DDS, Founder and CEO, Mixteca Organization, received the Community Health Leaders 2011 Award and will implement his project in Brooklyn, New York. The project will address domestic violence in the Mexican-American community in Brooklyn, by increasing the organizational capacity of Mixteca to train and deploy lay community health promoters to share culturally sensitive, life-saving information and resources to a community which are poorly served by mainstream health providers. Dr. Rincon and his staff will work with consultants to use institutional resources to screen, identify, and target those most at risk or experiencing domestic violence with education and referral to appropriate resources. The project will also conduct educational outreach through two workshops, Spanish language radio, web and print media. It is expected that Mixteca staff, in partnership with Lutheran Medical Center, will identify, refer, or link 100 individuals to a range of domestic violence services.
