The Foundation's Scholars in Health Policy Research Program was designed to provide postdoctoral training targeted to the most promising graduates of programs in the three disciplines of economics, political science, and sociology to advance their involvement in health policy research. This grant supports the Scholars Program at Michigan to provide stimulating and demanding two-year postdoctoral training for social scientists interested in health, health policy, and health services research. Training will build on the Scholars' strong disciplinary grounding both by expanding their knowledge of other disciplines and of health care institutions, politics, and policy, and also by fostering a thirst for discovery. Each Scholar will have frequent interaction with professors familiar with the challenges and opportunities of inter-disciplinary research. Scholars will be matched by interest with mentors, at least one of whom is a member of the core faculty. Key core faculty are drawn from the School of Public Health, the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, the Institute for Social Research, and the School of Medicine, in addition to three core departments of economics, political science, and sociology. The goals of the program are to: (1) extend the Scholars' knowledge about health, health care, and health policy; (2) highlight the important relevance of social, economic, and political factors in the design and implementation of health policy; (3) educate the Scholars about opportunities in the federal, state, and private arenas on how to influence health policy; (4) affect health policy through research and writing; and (5) nurture the Scholars' intellect and motivation to effect change.
