The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health & Society Scholars Program was designed to build the field of population health by training scholars to investigate the connections among biological, behavioral, environmental, economic, and social determinants of health; and develop, evaluate, and disseminate knowledge and interventions based upon integration of these determinants. This grant supports two Health and Society (HSS) scholars in the tenth cohort, as well as the infrastructure, intellectual activities, and research and policy opportunities that will provide training for these future leaders in population health. The primary goal of the UCSF and UC Berkeley HSS Program is dedicated to developing leaders in the field of population health. The following key components support the overall objectives of the program: instruction and development, research working groups, fostering an interdisciplinary approach, a cohesive faculty and administrative structure, and the facilitation of scholars' professional relationship with faculty mentors, and communications. Instruction and development is on a multidisciplinary development approach to population health. The core curriculum of the program includes a weekly seminar that is attended by the leadership committee, as well as the scholars. Mentorship is provided to the scholars as a fundamental component of training. Scholars identify a research mentor and career mentor and the leadership committee meets periodically with each scholar to determine progress and provide direction. The program has enabled an impressive network of faculty collaborators from many schools, departments, centers, and institutes across the two campuses.
