Developing diverse leaders in health and health care policy and advocacy, 2012-2014

This funding supports the National Urban Fellows' Public Health Policy Advocacy and Education initiative, which will: (1) place four fellows (two per year) at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; (2) place four fellows (two per year) at health policy organizations affiliated with the Foundation; and (3) support continuation of the health and health care curriculum for all 40 incoming and 40 graduating fellows. National Urban Fellows' programs and initiatives are committed to preparing diverse and underrepresented leaders for top service leadership. By cultivating diverse leadership for public and nonprofit organizations, National Urban Fellows prepares individuals, as well as the institutions they serve, for a changing America. The goal of the organization is to develop accomplished and courageous professionals of all ethnic and racial backgrounds to be leaders and change agents in the public and nonprofit sectors, with a strong commitment to social justice and equity. National Urban Fellows is the only leadership-development program in the country whose fellows combine an advanced degree with actual work experience. Over 14 months, each fellow earns a master's degree in public administration from Baruch College's School of Public Affairs while completing a 9-month, high-demand mentorship placement. This rigorous combination of course and field work ensures an understanding of theory and practice, so that National Urban Fellows' alumni consistently find practical answers to complex problems in challenging work environments.
