Developing and implementing New York state's Prevention Agenda 2013 to advance the state public health department toward national accreditation

This grant will enable the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) to complete development and begin implementation of its five-year state health-improvement plan, Prevention Agenda 2013. A state must have a health-improvement plan to apply for national accreditation by the Public Health Accreditation Board. NYSDOH is also committed to helping the state's local health agencies become accredited. The funding will allow NYSDOH to work with Health Research Inc. to hire a consultant with public health experience to manage the work of five committees focused on one of five priority areas of the health-improvement plan. Each committee comprises multiple stakeholders who will participate in planning multisector action in its priority area. In addition, the funding will support local health departments statewide in developing and sustaining multisector coalitions to draft and implement health-improvement plans. This project will serve as a test case for a planned larger Robert Wood Johnson Foundation authorization for targeted assistance to states and large cities to achieve accreditation and improve health. Deliverables will include a state health-improvement plan that will satisfy national accreditation requirements and advancement of local plans. These plans will demonstrate how state and local departments will work with other agencies, community-based organizations, and health care and other community partners to address priority public health issues.
