This project will update a decade-old analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that provided a rough approximation of the determinants of premature mortality, attributing only 10 percent to deficiencies in the health care delivery system. The United States spends far more per capita for health care services than any other nation, while it scores relatively poorly on key health indicators. The single biggest determinant in the CDC study was health behaviors. This project will update that analysis with three deliverables: (1) graphic charts accompanied by short narratives that explain the underlying methodologies and conclusions; (2) an article(s) presenting methodologies and conclusions; and (3) a public web site with background materials, references, and slides for use by interested health care leaders and policymakers.
