Supporting continued operations of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Center for Health Policy, 2012-2013

The Foundation's Health Policy Partnership in Diversity initiative was designed to increase the diversity of those with formal training in the fields of economics, political science and sociology who engage in health services and health policy research. This funding will support the first year of the second phase of development (2012-2016) of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Center for Health Policy (the Center), focusing on developing the Center's research and policy-analysis capacity, as well as refining doctoral education and training, including developing the health policy experience and the depth of Center-affiliated junior faculty in social science departments. RWJF launched the Center in 2007 with endowment and program funds, dedicating the Center to increasing the diversity of health policy leaders with formal training in the social sciences, especially the fields of economics, political science and sociology, who engage in health-services and health policy research. The Center, at the University of New Mexico, continues to work from the principle that development of health policy should be grounded in the experience of the most vulnerable population groups and based in research informed by those perspectives. The Foundation intends that its support for the Center will further its quest to become a nationally recognized locus for health policy research that will inform health policy debates at multiple levels. The first-phase support for the Center built its infrastructure, including hiring leadership, staff, and faculty; recruiting a national advisory board; developing a strategic plan; and laying the groundwork that will allow the university to work toward achieving the long-term goals.
