This renewal grant will fund eight targeted research projects on the pricing of foods and their marketing to African American families and children. These projects will inform both policy and advocacy for childhood obesity prevention. Deliverables will include two reports, five research briefs, five journal submissions, and timely briefings of policy advocates supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). The projects will analyze existing datasets and work with RWJF-funded partners to: (1) understand how foods are priced and marketed to African Americans; (2) develop a research brief on how price affects African American children's food consumption and weight outcomes; (3) understand how prices and price promotions affect shopping patterns of the caregivers of African American children; (4) examine in depth where products are purchased and for what prices; (5) explore legal and policy strategies to limit pricing discounts on unhealthy foods; (6) identify opportunities to promote healthy eating through retail pricing and marketing; (7) examine racial differences in children's exposure to food advertising; and (8) analyze the impact of youth-led countermarketing through social media.
