This grant supports a symposium examining the relationship of health care costs with U.S. budget deficits and the national debt. Participants will aim to develop an understanding of what is meant when health care spending is characterized as "unsustainable" and, in particular, to seek to quantify a financially sustainable health care system. The symposium will be held on July 24, 2012, at the Pew Charitable Trusts, in Washington. Former Office of Management and Budget Director Alice Rivlin, who will keynote, will be joined by Joe Antos (American Enterprise Institute), Len Nichols (George Mason University), Arnold Milstein (Stanford), Ezekiel Emanuel (University of Pennsylvania), David Lansky (Pacific Business Group on Health), and Karen Ignagni (America's Health Insurance Plans), among others. In addition to meeting and logistics costs, the grant will cover the grantee's pre-meeting research; dissemination of a video; and writing, design, and dissemination of a monograph.
