Supporting a coordinating center to continue the work of the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research, 2012-2013

This grant supports Family Health International 360 (FHI 360) in continuing to serve as the coordinating center (CC) for the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research (NCCOR), launched in 2009 as a collaboration of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to accelerate progress in reversing the national childhood obesity epidemic. NCCOR's mission is to improve the focus, efficiency, infrastructure and impact of research in childhood obesity prevention by addressing key gaps in a coordinated way and by collaborating to reduce major stumbling blocks to useful, solution-oriented research. NCCOR's goals are to: (1) identify, design, and evaluate practical and sustainable interventions, especially in high-risk populations and communities; (2) increase and improve national, state, and local surveillance of childhood obesity; (3) improve the ability of childhood obesity researchers and program evaluators to conduct research and program evaluations; (4) provide national leadership to accelerate implementation of evidence-informed practice and policy; and (5) work with non-health partners and funders to integrate childhood obesity priorities with synergistic initiatives (e.g., environmental design and sustainability, food systems, food marketing, disabilities, and economics). FHI 360 helps NCCOR achieve its goals by providing four main services in supporting the collaborative: strategic planning and expert facilitation; communications services; management and coordination; and evaluation and research/scientific support. RWJF's funding for NCCOR during this renewal period will be matched or exceeded by each of the other funding organizations: CDC, NIH and USDA.
