This award will renew the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's support of the State Health Leadership Initiative (SHLI) program. The goal of SHLI is to rapidly develop the leadership capacity of newly appointed state or territorial health officers (S/THOs) because they are the chief state policymakers, administrators, and advocates for public health. The program equips S/THOs with the skills, training, and network connections necessary to respond to the unique policy and management challenges of the position. To date, 173 current and former S/THOs have participated in the program, and the Foundation expects that up to 24 new S/THOs will participate over the course of this renewal. The program includes: (1) a site visit to new S/THOs by the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) executive director within six months of their appointment; (2) an annual one-week S/THO-customized leadership retreat conducted by faculty at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government; (3) a mentoring program; (4) an annual networking meeting and public-policy training for new S/THOs, conducted by ASTHO and the National Governors Association (NGA); (5) a personalized 360 assessment, with skill-building feedback; and (6) funds to support professional development or strategic planning. In addition, the program supports two activities that are open to all S/THOs: an annual strategic meeting, and an NGA-managed policy project of the governor's health team of each participating state.
