Scaling up and building systemic support for social and emotional learning in school districts nationwide

In order to develop strategies and tools for sustaining social and emotional learning (SEL) in schools, the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (Collaborative) will partner with the Center for Health and Health Care in Schools (Center) to build field capacity for implementation of SEL programs. Funding to the Collaborative will support the development of financial strategies for the long-term sustainability of mental health programs and practices, including SEL, in schools nationwide. With funding from the NoVo Foundation, the Collaborative has developed the Collaborating Districts Initiative to implement SEL in eight school districts. The Collaborative and Center will partner in using this initiative as a learning lab to develop financial tools that can be used for all districts nationwide. Specific activities of the Collaborative will include: (1) hiring a finance and funding expert to develop a tool to identify, allocate, and redirect resources for educational priorities, including SEL; (2) training Center and Collaborative consultants to use the tool; (3) developing cost models for implementing SEL; and (4) partnering with the Center to document findings to create products for broader dissemination. Deliverables will include: (1) a briefing paper on preserving educational priorities and an associated tool for district use; (2) cost models for systematic SEL implementation; and (3) individualized sustainability plans using the newly created financial tools for three of the Collaborative's participating districts.
