The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Community Health Leaders program (CHL) was designed to provide recognition for the contributions community health leaders make to achieving RWJF's mission and goals and to enhance the capacity of these individuals to have a more permanent and widespread impact on health care problems. The CHL Award annually honors 10 individuals who have made significant contributions to improving the health and health care of their communities. Each Community Health Leader receives an award in the amount of $125,000. Twenty thousand dollars goes directly to the leader to recognize past accomplishments and $105,000 supports a project that continues and enhances the leader's work through an appropriate organization with which the leader is associated. Richard Nares, Founder and Executive Director, Emilio Nares Foundation, received the 2011 CHL Award and will work with the Emilio Nares Foundation in San Diego to implement his project.Richard Nares will conduct a project to test the utility and satisfaction of the Loving Tabs Medical Garment, a specially designed shirt with a flap on the left shoulder to permit hospital professionals easy access to a young patient's IV devices without having to lift an entire shirt. The design and use of a soft, moisture-wicking fabric minimize the immense discomfort experienced by patients undergoing lengthy and complex medical treatment. A project director will oversee the pilot testing of the garment at 3 southern California hospitals, including surveys and interviews with 100 patients, 100 care givers, 50 physicians, 50 nurses, and 50 allied health personnel. Production of the garments for this project has been underwritten with other funds. The results of the project will help to refine the product and further market/circulate it to area hospitals.
