Implementing the rapid-learning concept for health systems

This project will be the final phase of an initiative to promote the vision and implementation of a rapid-learning health system as a breakthrough strategy for producing evidence-driven quality care that can inform best practices and diffuse knowledge rapidly throughout the health care system. Rapid learning is about creating a national clinical-research paradigm that systematically taps into and analyzes real-time/real-world electronic patient data contained in large, searchable databases to learn how different treatments and technologies work in diverse patient populations, and then systematically sharing that learning with the broader community of practice and policy. In the previous three phases, this project focused on the successful introduction of rapid-learning ideas in national health policies and programs, and on generating large public investments in the capacity to do rapid learning. During this final year, the project will focus on implementation. This will involve developing "learning laboratories," which showcase rapid learning in three areas that can be models for future development throughout the health system. The key deliverables will be published papers, meetings, models and policy changes.
