This program contract supports Phase 2 of the Human Capital Retrospective, the fourth in a series of reports assessing Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) investments in multiple grant initiatives aimed at an overarching goal. The purpose of the retrospectives is to provide insights about Foundation strategy to the Board, the staff, and the philanthropic field. Many human-capital investments focus on developing and supporting individuals in various fields of health-related work. These individuals were engaged in providing health care, in leadership for health care or health policy, in scholarship on health-related issues, and in public service. This project will explore in depth the ways the Foundation supports individuals through grants, training, mentorship, and other strategies. It will assess the strengths and weaknesses of the strategies used, in the context of different operational environments and external forces. In Phase 1, the contractor completed a thorough document review, typology development and broad trend analysis of the Foundation's 40-year commitment of more than $1.5 billion dollars in support of human-capital efforts. This preliminary work will be presented to Foundation staff. Deliverables for Phase 2 will be a written report and presentation to RWJF staff. Additionally, the project director will help craft the presentation of results to the RWJF Board of Trustees.
