Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located. This grant will continue the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's annual support for the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul's program of crisis assistance to indigent and distressed families in Central New Jersey. This project will enable the 21 participating local interfaith congregations to respond promptly to the crisis needs of vulnerable families, including help with housing, utility payments and emergency assistance for food. Deliverables will include food-pantry supplies for about 5,000 people per month, and cash payments, ranging from a few hundred dollars up to a thousand dollars maximum.
