Supporting Prevention First's Safe Dates program in Point Pleasant, N.J., to prevent teen-dating violence

The Foundation's program, New Jersey Health Initiatives, was designed to support projects in New Jersey that develop new approaches to resolving the state's health care needs, focusing on the Foundation's goal areas.This grant will help Prevention First establish its Safe Dates program in Point Pleasant Borough and to serve as a model for other Ocean County, N.J., schools interested in replicating the program for their students. Designed to help teens recognize the difference between caring, supportive relationships and controlling, manipulative, or abusive dating relationships, the Safe Dates program is recognized as a Model Program in the National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices of the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Prevention First's success in implementing the Safe Dates program in other New Jersey schools was highlighted as an example of a program response to the 2011 New Jersey law requiring school districts to implement violence-prevention policy and dating-violence-prevention education. The Safe Dates program--a nine-session curriculum and poster contest--will be offered to ninth-grade students during the spring semester and 12th-grade students in the winter semester (a total of 460 students). Prevention First will select small groups of students to help develop and assist in efforts to raise awareness in the school and throughout Point Pleasant and other Ocean County schools.
