This grant supports the National League of Cities Institute (NLCI) in expanding its capacity to engage and assist local officials in implementing strategies to counter the childhood obesity epidemic. NLCI will: (1) hire a full-time program manager and program associate to coordinate outreach and technical assistance to city and county leaders, build and maintain partnerships, interpret data, and report communities' progress; (2) create a website with resources for local officials to address childhood obesity and to help them track their goals; (3) analyze the data collected through the website, produce reports on local communities and their progress, and coordinate with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to document instances where additional resources are needed; and (4) raise the visibility of this initiative among local officials and disseminate key resources to local policymakers. NLCI will work closely with legal counsel to ensure that no Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funds are used for lobbying or political activities, including the development of guidelines for the provision of technical assistance.
