Addressing the health determinants that underlie the success of the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading
This grant supports the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading (Campaign) in its decade-long, foundation-led, civic-engagement effort to: (1) close the gap in reading achievement that separates many low-income students and children of color from their peers; (2) raise the bar for reading success to world-class measures of proficiency; and (3) ensure equitable opportunity for all children to meet high standards, especially children from low-income families and children of color. The overall goal of the Campaign is that by 2020 a dozen states or more will increase by at least 100 percent the number of low-income children reading proficiently at the end of third grade. Health care, health services and health outcomes will play a significant role in whether communities meet this goal. Thus, the Campaign's GLR Healthy Children Project will provide more than 150 participating communities, Campaign partners, and other stakeholders with the information and tools needed to integrate health throughout all aspects of the Campaign. Specifically, deliverables for the project will include a healthy-children starter toolkit for communities and a project plan for review by the Healthy Children Advisory Council.
