Expanding the knowledge and experience of current and future players in the field of public health law

The Foundation's program, Advancing Partners and Practice through Public Health Law, was designed to further build the field of public health law through enhancing communities of learning and practice.This grant supports the National Coordinating Center for the Public Health Law Network in implementing five pilot fellowship programs intended to attract qualified, enthusiastic individuals to the field and to expand knowledge and expertise among those working to improve health through policies and laws. Specifically, the funding will provide a fellowship director, administrative and logistical support for program implementation, and consultants to provide knowledge of adult learning and of creation of fellowship programs. The use of public health law to advance policies and practices that improve health supports the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's goal of improving public health. As part of this effort, the Foundation has a desire to build opportunities that provide hands-on experience for attorneys, public health practitioners, professors and policymakers. The fellowship programs are an important element of this work. Although the key elements of these five programs have been established, assistance in developing them, resolution of issues related to piloting them, and support in managing logistics to facilitate timely implementation are crucial.
