This grant project will help directors of local health departments (LHDs), state health officers, funders, and other decision-makers understand LHDs' organization, structure, and finance in order to make smarter management and leadership decisions. To this end, the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) will: (1) conduct its National Profile of Local Health Departments, which will include a publicly available dataset that will be harmonized with datasets of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials and the National Association of Local Boards of Health and that will be included in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Health and Medical Care Archive; (2) strengthen NACCHO's capacity to conduct its own project-specific research activities and its ability to support public health systems and services researchers; and (3) share practice-relevant research findings and methods with LHDs and encourage the use of this information in administrative and programmatic decisions.
