Supporting the FDA's efforts to fully implement the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act: Public Health Law Center

In order to ensure that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is supported by an informed and engaged public health community as it works to implement the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (FSPTCA), the Tobacco Control Legal Consortium of the Public Health Law Center will work with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids to provide FDA with strong, evidence-based information. The five key strategies to accomplish that goal will help FDA make critical decisions about regulation; defend its decisions against the tobacco industry's legal challenges; and address new and complicated issues that will have far-reaching effects. The five strategies are: (1) educating the public health community about FDA and how it works; (2) responding to FDA's requests for assistance and input; (3) encouraging FDA to improve public health through effective implementation of FSPTCA; (4) building support for FDA action; and (5) providing legal support for challenges to FSPTCA. Deliverables will include monitoring FDA and industry actions; providing information for the public health community; organizing convenings to educate and engage the public health community; and providing assistance in dealing with scientific and legal issues that arise.
