The Foundation's program, New Jersey Health Initiatives, was designed to support projects in New Jersey that develop new approaches to resolving the state's health care needs, focusing on the Foundation's goal areas. The purpose of this project is to strengthen Newark Emergency Services for Families, Inc., (NESF) organizational capacity by first reconfirming and prioritizing their capacity needs through a comprehensive organizational assessment, and then supporting the development and implementation of a strategy to strengthen their organizational operations. Deliverables include completion of the organizational assessment, development and implementation of a capacity enhancement strategy, and reports documenting progress toward the strategy's implementation. Prior to strategy implementation, a revised work plan and budget revision will be submitted for the second phase of funding.NESF has provided a wide range of social, health and human services to those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in Essex County (primarily Newark), for over 30 years. Recognized as a critical service provider in Newark, NESF received capacity building support from funders, both in the form of assessments and implementation. Driven by the new executive director and board chair, NESF was been able to make difficult but necessary decisions, "right-sizing" the organization with a $2.6 million annual operating budget.
