Expanding the Food Bank of South Jersey's Kids Cafe program to provide healthy foods to children

Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located. This grant will help the Food Bank of South Jersey to expand its Kids Café program from three sites to 13 in partnership with local community-based organizations. In Southern New Jersey, 36 percent of children live in danger of not having adequate nutritious food. Close to 40 percent of the families that take advantage of the local feeding programs are families that have children under the age of 15. In the existing Kids Café program, approximately 193 children at three sites receive free nutritious meals and snacks throughout the year. The program expansion will daily serve hot meals, snacks and nutrition education at 13 sites, approximately 570 children, in after-school and summer programs in traditionally under resourced neighborhoods. The Food Bank of South Jersey will track program success through monthly service reports submitted by program sites.
