Establishing the National Dental Pipeline Learning Institute to disseminate lessons and expertise of the RWJF and California programs

This grant supports the establishment of the National Dental Pipeline Learning Institute. This institute will disseminate best practices from the Pipeline, Profession and Practice: Community-Based Dental Education (Dental Pipeline) national program--a collaborative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the California Endowment. This program is intended to further the work begun by the RWJF Dental Pipeline initiative, which provided early lessons about how to develop more effective and lower cost delivery systems to improve access to oral health care for vulnerable populations. Although the Dental Pipeline program has closed, the spread of lessons learned from the national initiative, as well as specific efforts of demonstration sites at California dental schools, is essential for policy changes related to innovation in dental education, improved access to quality dental care, greater system efficiency, and community-level collaborations. The learning institute will offer participatory educational programs to dental schools and their community partners nationwide. Under this project, a curriculum will be developed and 10 partnerships of dental schools and community organizations will be enrolled in a 12-month series that will include seminars; webinars; discussions and dissections of real case studies; and an extensive review of financial, operational and organizational data for future planning.
