Analyzing influences on legislation to prevent childhood obesity

This project's primary aims are to: (1) identify time trends for and predictors of state legislation on childhood obesity prevention that was introduced and enacted from 2003 through 2013; and (2) conduct case studies in six states on advocacy efforts and results for comprehensive prevention bills, and in six additional states or municipalities for food-pricing bills. The research team will select case studies with input from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to maximize relevance to the Foundation's Childhood Obesity team's efforts in priority policy areas. This project builds on two previous RWJF-funded projects--the Childhood Obesity Policy Study and State Childhood Obesity Policy Evaluation (SCOPE)--designed to better understand the patterns, predictors, evidence and advocacy needs related to childhood obesity prevention. Deliverables will include academic reports, findings published in peer-reviewed journals, and policy and research briefs. The grantee will not use RWJF funds for lobbying purposes.
