Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located. This two-year grant will help New Jersey Spotlight--a new online news and award-winning information site--provide full-time news coverage of health and health care in New Jersey, including daily news and community forums. The grantee will use funds primarily to: (1) hire a full-time reporter; (2) provide editorial and Web support to establish health and health care policy as core issues for this news service; and (3) sponsor health and health care roundtables and Webinars. These activities will help New Jersey Spotlight increase its in-depth health and health care reporting and increase the size of its readership and the number of subscribers, thereby eventually allowing it to contract its services with area news outlets.
