Informing partners in RWJF's Communities Creating Healthy Environments program on unhealthy practices of the food-marketing industry, 2011-2012
The Foundation's program, Communities Creating Healthy Environments: Improving Access to Healthy Foods and Safe Places to Play in Communities of Color, was designed to build state and national momentum to reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity through strategic investment in those communities most affected.The purpose of this project is for the Berkeley Media Studies Group (BMSG), a leader in media-advocacy training and strategic consultation to support social change to advance public health, to work with Communities Creating Healthy Environments (CCHE) to ensure that communities are: (1) aware of the latest marketing practices of the food industry, particularly in communities of color; and (2) equipped to challenge practices that interfere with establishing healthy environments for children and adolescents. BMSG, a project of the Public Health Institute, will monitor industry literature; prepare briefs and alerts designed for public health advocates; participate in trainings and meetings that CCHE convenes; provide technical assistance to grantees and other CCHE partners; and prepare quarterly, annual and financial reports. BMSG will develop all communications-related activities and products in close collaboration with the National Program Office and the Foundation's Childhood Obesity communications team.
