The Foundation's Active Living Research program was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess structural, environmental, and policy changes with the potential to increase population levels of physical activity.The purpose of this project is to study the effects of school gardens on physical activity for New York State school students in 4th - 5th grades. Data will be collected pre- and post-installation of school gardens. Student physical activity levels will be measured using self-report questionnaire, accelerometer, and direct observation. Deliverables will include article publications, research briefs, and various presentations to disseminate research findings. All policy-related communications will be created in collaboration with the Foundation's communications staff and consultants. No Foundation funds will be used for lobbying purposes.
