Phase 2 of the Yale University Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity's (Rudd) food-marketing initiative to encourage industry and government to reduce the marketing of unhealthy foods to children has been redesigned with the help of the Rudd steering committee and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) communications staff and consultants to build on Phase 1 and advance RWJF's new advocacy efforts. Phase 2 will include: (1) measuring and reporting youths' exposure to various forms of food marketing and to racially/ethnically-targeted marketing; (2) evaluating the effects of different forms of marketing and marketing regulation on children's nutrition and health; (3) working with RWJF programs and leaders, national advocacy groups, and local governments to guide key change agents (policy-makers, courts, state attorneys general, parents/child advocates) and the public toward more effective marketing practices and regulations; and (4) monitoring outcomes of this work, including changes in public opinion, legislation, legal action, community initiatives, and voluntary industry improvements. Deliverables will include reports, peer-reviewed publications and multimedia releases as a coordinated communications plan that bridges all project components and is synchronized with RWJF communications efforts. Rudd will not use RWJF funds for lobbying.
