To better understand factors that enable the use of evidence in policy-making, this project will facilitate a convening of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Group's major programs in health policy research. The Foundation supports rigorous research to produce sound decisions about laws and policies that affect health. Ideally, researchers focus on significant topics of interest to practitioners and policy makers, and then disseminate the results to those who can use the evidence to make informed decisions about policies and practices. The Foundation conceptualizes the convening as an initial meeting, with policy-research grantees as the main audience, focusing on: (1) translating evidence into action; (2) leveraging existing networks and ideas; and (3) creating synergy in research, dissemination and translation. If the convening is successful, we will consider additional stages with communications, advocacy and practitioner audiences. The OMG Center for Collaborative Learning will lead planning and facilitation for this effort. Deliverables will include: (1) working with Foundation staff to plan and facilitate a day-and-a-half convening for policy-research grantees, expert panelists, and Health Group staff in spring 2012; (2) conducting scans and interviews with participants to create background materials, such as case studies; (3) coordinating meeting logistics, such as participants' travel; and (4) preparing and disseminating post-convening materials, including a summary report on lessons and opportunities for future collaboration.
