The purpose of this project is to build the capacity of the Delaware Valley hunger relief system to provide adequate amounts of nutritious food to more needy people. The district to be served through this project has been named as the fourth worst in America for "food hardship" (lack of money to buy enough food to satisfy a family's needs). This initiative will: (1) open a new stocked and staffed community food center serving over 7,000 households by the end of the first year; (2) create 25-30 new jobs at the center; and (3) provide equipment and technical support to existing food cupboards to improve their capacity to deliver an additional million pounds of fresh and frozen foods per year. The new conveniently located community food center will have expanded hours and adequate refrigeration and space to maintain larger food stocks. It will provide free food and subsidized food for purchase. Clients' self esteem and empowerment will also be increased by being able to shop for and choose their own food rather than be handed a box of pre-packed items.
